TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan, a Review by Darkmoon

Release Date: 1990
System: Game Boy
Players: 1
Genre: Beat 'Em Up

For those of you new to the series just playing you way through the game chronologically, you will notice that Fall feels much more like TMNT 1 than 2 for the NES. It's actually a common syndrome. I mean, you look at the Mario series, and how by the time Mario Land came out they already were well past Mario 2, and I think 3 was either already out or on the horizon. And yet, Mario Land feels more like to first adventure than the later games.

You can attribute it to lazyness or not enough faith in the Game Boy. As we've seen with later games, the GB was able to do a lot with only 4 colors at its disposal.

Anyway, that's really more of an aside. Simply put, if you're a fan of the first NES games action sequences, than you'll love Fall. Much like the third game for the series, Fall ignores the whole standard Beat 'em Up level design, where you can move all about the screen, and gives you a simple platform game with Beat 'em roots. For the first adventure, it works. I can see why in the 2nd game they tried to emulate the feel of the arcade games... and honestly, I hated that game for it. The GB is great for platforming action.

The game's plot is much like all the other games. Shredder is a bad man, he steal something, kidnaps someone, and makes mean faces on camera. The Turtles go after him, ninja weapons in hand, to save, rescue, and eat pizza for health.

Along with the basic game there's some secret mini-games you can play for lives... I think. May have just been pizza, but I'm pretty suer it was lives. When playing, make sure to never believe Splinter. It'll help you out.

Graphics are about on par with the first NES game, except in black and white. So, you won't be bowled over by them, but they are serviceable. Sound is about the same.

Really, it's not like I'll have a hard time selling you on playing this. All fans of TMNT will anyway, and as far as TMNT games on the GB go, this is the cream of the crop. Take that as you will
