TMNT II: The Arcade Game, a Review (that Trips the Flight Lantastic) by Darkmoon

Release Date: 1990
System: NES
Players: 2
Genre: Beat 'Em Up

Well, I dunno how many of you played the original NES game, but to me, it was a big disappointment. I was one of those little brats that would crowd the TMNT arcade machine and drop a ton of money into it while thier big sister guarded them so evil older kids wouldn't bump them off, much to the chargrin of evil older kids. The Arcade game was a far different beast from the original NES game.

So, when TMNT II came out, I was a very happy child. The game I loved to play in the arcades was coming to my little gray box. How could this be bad.

Really, it wasn't. Although far under-powered in comparison to it's bigger bretheren, TMNT II was a fun little game. You got to run around, fighting foot soldiers, just so you could get to the next level and fight foot soldiers. It wasn't a game that required a degree in rocket science to play, but it was fun.

April has been kidnapped, and it's up to our dashing team of Mutant Teens from down under (and no, not Australia) to get her back... oh yeah, and save the city too.

The levels were a little different from the Arcades, but only those of us that like to huddle over our game machines, memorizing every nuance of a game would notice. I think it featured a couple of levels that the NES didn't, but then, the NES had new levels. The Arctic City and an Asian COffee House. Twas neat and fun.

The game did feature classic NES slowdown and graphic glitches, but it was an NES. What do you expect. In the end, it was a far better game (in my mind) than the original NES game, and was, so far, only topped by TMNT IV for best in the series.

So yeah, go pick up a copy if you hadn't already.
