TMNT II: Back from the Sewers, a Review in Black and White by Darkmoon

Release Date: 1991
System: Game Boy
Players: 1
Genre: Beat 'Em Up

I was never as impressed with the Game Boy games in the series as I was with the arcade style console counterparts. It wasn't the black and white graphicsm per se, more of the general suckage the games seemed to give off like a stink. I've seen very successful beat 'em up games on the Game Boy, so I know it was possible to have a good game in the genre in wonderful B and W... So what went wrong?

Back From the Sewers was the TMNT GB game I played the most, mostly cause I owned it, and it was much easier than Radical Rescue. It wasn't a terrible game, but it just lacked that great game feel. The graphics, even giving consideration to teh fact that they had to be black and white, sucked ass. Everything looked bad, sprites, backgrounds... everything (although the Pizza Monsters were fairly well drawn). The drawing style just hurt my eyes.

The action wasn't that great either. The turtles lacked a lot of combos, relying mostly on one attack or a jump kick to get around. Not the most beat 'em friendly attack system.

Level design always felt uninspired too. Just in general, I disliked this game... Although I liked it better than Radical Rescue.

So yeah, I dislike it. My apologies to all the fans of it out there, but I really can't understand why you like it.
