TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, a 100% Mutagen Free Review by Darkmoon

The lovely TMNT 4. I remember playing this in a video game store the week it came out. A buddy and I were able to hog a machine and play through the entire game without getting kicked off. It ruled. I think we actually sold a couple of SNES's with that play session.
Anyway, TMNT 4 obviously takes place after TMNT 2 and 3, although honetly, plot continuity has never been a strong point in the series. Basically, Shredder decided it was high time to do something nefarious, so he up and steals the Statue of Liberty or something. It's inconsequiential to the gameplay, I simply mention it here.
Our four amphibious avengers go off to save the statue, but Shredder has a bigger quest planned for them. One that will prove to be... well, fairly easy anyway. Challenege was never a big deal in the TMNT arcade style games.
TMNT 4 features a bunch of new refinements over the previous games. The graphics of course run smoother, with less slowdown than the NES games. The game is really pretty to look at, in comparison to the old NES games, but then, we'd hope they would be. It's not the most fantastic game from that era ever, but it certainly is bright and pretty.
On the gameplay front, the turtles can now throw foot soldiers around, and perform a flurry of special attacks. And, thank gods, they got rid of the stupid Kangaroo Jump from TMNT3. They still have the special moves that drain power from the turtles for each use, which I think is dumb. It always seemed to me that if you're gonna have special moves, instead of penalizing for using them, make them a button combo. Nothing hard, but not something that you'd use all the time just because it's not the Y button.
Beside the main mode there's also a Time Trial, which, I dunno, not a big thriller. Go play the levels you already played once, but now in short chunks of time. Not really my speed. I'm sure someone enjoyed it, but eh, I'll pass.
All in all, the game is quite good, and deserving of being in anyone's collection. The beat 'em up genre is full of a lot of similar games, and while, if you've played on good TMNT game, you've played them all, the emphasis is on the good bit. This is a good (if just like the previous few) game.
