It's on days like this that I must remind myself that I can't expect much from the Genesis. It was a fun system, but head to head with the SNES, it produced sub-par games. Take today's game, The Hyperstone Heist.
Shredder has decided to steal the whole of Manhattan, a rather ballsy move. The TMNT, of course, set off to fight him. But, he has a magical Hyperstone. It's some mystical doo-hicky he bought off E-Bay. It allows him to steal whole islands, yet it still sharp enough to cut a tomato. Will they be able to defeat him? Will Shredder finally make a good tomato bisque?
Based on the same graphics and engine as TMNT 4 for the SNES, Hyperstone offers a similar plot (as all the games did), but more of an arrange mode than a different game. You'll notice when playing through Hyperstone than many stages are similar, but general layout is drastically different. Enemies and moves are even similar, but play control, and fun factor take a serious hit.
Graphics and sound, expectedly take a hit as well, but it's teh bad play mechanics that bother me. I'll be facing on enemy, and my guy actually turns his back on teh closer opponent to take on one on his back side, WHO'S FURTHE AWAY! Great planning there.
Bosses are expectedly hard, but if you manage your 1st and 2nd player controlls, you'll be fine.
This all is not to say that Hyperstone is a bad game, it's just not a great one. For those without a SNES, or people looking for a different fix of TMNT, this game is fine, but really, stick to the SNES if you can.
Score: 7.4
