Things Change (Season 1, Episode 1)

For those of you new to the site, this is actually the 3rd episode review from the new series that I have written, although it's the first episode in the series. If you check eps 10 and 19, you'll read why.
But, moving right into the episode, we are dropped into the middle of a practice session at the old sewer home. Splinter has one of those sagely sensei training things he wants the turtles to perform, which just means they have to blow out a candle that Splinter is holding, or walk across rice paper without damaging it. I never did understand why senseis do these strange trials in the day when we have gym equipment and stopwatches. Anyway...
Mousers attack. If it seems like they aren't spending a whole lot of time letting us get involved with the characters, well they aren't. This isn't your standard first ep where they do the whole "year one" backstory. While I like that they just drop us in so we can get a feel for the day to day of the turtles, some backstory woulda been nice. Other wise, it just feels like the old series rebooted, and aside from lacking the class theme song, it's just another day for our turtley heroes.
But, as I said, Mousers attack. Splinter is sperated from the turtles, and they have to go top side to get back to him. Mostly, it's just a silly plotline so that the turtles are forced to confront the foot. Nothing really feels emotionally charged. Kinda sad.
Couple of things though: For starters, where does Donnie get all his gear. I know we're supposed to accept him as the Donnie we're used to, just without all that pesky stuff we've seen him do in the past. It seems like they both want the turtles to have all the cool gear, and yet also just be starting out year one style. Doesn't work for me.
Raph is a real dick in this series. More so than any other version of him. It's very hard to like him this time around, which hurts the series.
In the end, the family is reuinited, and they have a new home. Very blah episode.
Score: 5.2
