The Shredder Strikes (Season 1, Episode 10)

I have to admit, I wasn't expecting much for the new series when I heard the theme song one day, but damn, the new series really aint that great at all. Now yes, I know that the original wasn't exceptional... but dangit I was hoping for so much more.

Leo is out practicing, as he is want to do so he can remain the best ninja turtle. When the foot shoot an arrow at Leo, he finds a note from the Shredder on it. Basically, it's an invitation for tea and crumpets, as well as to talk a little shop. Leo isn't impressed by the crumpets, but what Shredder says about a bigger threat to everyone Leo listens to.

There's also this deal with a big cool sword, but it's reall inconsequential.

The brothers and Splinter confront Leo about his clandestined tea and crumpet mission, and Leo explains that he wants to team up with Shredder. Splinter is forced to tell the story of how his master was killed by Shredder. Leo is forced to face what he thought was the truth, and in the end rejects what Shredder told him. There's a fight, and the episode ends right before a big fight between Shredder and the Turtles.

Mostly a background episode, we delve into the history of Shredder and Splinter. On the whole, I wasn't very impressed. While I liked the backstory on Shredder, I wasn't sucked into the plotline with Leo. There was a whole building sub-plot with some aliens or something, which seemed kinda weak too. On the whole, it just wasn't a very strong episode.

I think what got me the most was that aside from some differences in characters, it seemd like this episode could have come from the original series. I loved the original, but I'm not looking for the same thing. I think the whole development team dropped the ball, because they could have crafted a show that appealed to kids and adults, all of whom are TMNT fans, and instead it's just a kids show. Merf.

Score: 5.4
