Storyline
(Translated from the Japanese Manual
by Johnny "Help Me!")

Once in a hundred years, the power of Christ is weakened by man filled with evil in their hearts, praying for the resurrection of Dracula, the prince of darkness. And with each ressurection, he becomes more powerful than ever.

The last time Dracula was brought back into this world, the entire world was covered in darkness. With world of darkness now controlled by Dracula's ambitions, a hero named Christopher Belmont set out to defeat him. Christopher defeated Dracula and peace returned to the countryside of Transylvania, at least for another hundred years.

One easter night, the village was celebrating the ressurection of Christ with a grand carnival. Meanwhile, outside the village, at the abandoned ruins of a monastery, a group of paganists were conducting a black mass, a ritual where human blood is poured into the remains of Count Dracula in order to bring him back to life. A dark thunderstorm covered the entire village and the monastery was struck by lightning. Dracula, the Prince of Darkness has returned!

A young man named Simon, the descendant of the Belmont clan, has come forth to help out in this crisis. Armed with a whip possesed with mysterious powers, passed down to him from his father, he sets out to Dracula's castle on his own...

Game Overview

In 1986, a little game was released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System (NES) called Akumajou Dracula (Demon Castle Dracula). The game centered on a vampire hunter called Simon Belmont, armed with the Vampire Killer whip, setting out to destroy Dracula. The game is an action platformer, and as you can tell by this site, has spawned over twenty sequels. A year later it was released in Europe and North America on the Nintendo Entertainment System, which was cartridge as opposed to diskette. It was renamed as Castlevania, The game has also been released on the PC, Commodore 64, Amiga and the Arcade. Just recently, it has also been re-released for the Game Boy Advance.

Contrary to popular belief, the FDS version of Akumajou Dracula was released BEFORE Vampire Killer for the MSX. By a mere month: The FDS version came out in September 1986, the MSX version in October 1986. Just to let you all know (since I get emails to this day). If you go by US dates, though the NES version comes out after the MSX, which is where the misconception obviously started.

The story in Castlevnia is pretty basic, as was most games at the time. You play the role of Simon Belmondo (Belmont in North America). You come from a long line of vampire hunters whose role every 100 years is to destroy the infamous count Dracula. Simon brandishes the mystical whip called the Vampire Killer and starts off at the gates of Demon Castle Dracula to defeat the count himself. The game combined many icons of myth, folklore and fiction of the horror genre into one universe. Included are such popular monsters like Frankenstein's Monster, Medusa, and even the Grim Reaper.

The game was difficult for the time it was released. Castlevania is a tried and true classic that the later games look back to all the time. Heck, the first level has made an appearance in most Castlevania games, such as Castlevania 3 and Rondo of Blood. A definite must-play for any Castlevania fan.
