Doujinshi are comic books like manga, but unlike manga, they are unlicensed. Therefore none of these are official tri-Ace products. Many have wonderful art, though, as well as stories more daring than those in manga. Doujinshi has somewhat garnered a bad name due to the fact that many are hentai or yaoi, which is pornography. Those who know more about the doujinshi industry know that there are many doujinshi which are not pornographic. All the ones on this page are normal doujinshi which contain humorous or serious stories. For the tri-Ace collectors interested in purchasing doujinshi, keep a few things in mind. 1. Don't judge a book by its cover. If you want to avoid buying hentai doujinshi, make sure you know what you're getting. Many have perfectly innocent covers that wouldn't suggest that the story is pornographic. Also, the cover isn't always a good representation of the artwork on the inside. Sometimes beautiful doujinshi have ugly covers, and vice versa. 2. Unlike some manga, no doujinshi is ever published in English. You're going to have to import or wait for a store to import the doujinshi for you. 3. Be wary of prices. They can go sky high, even if the doujinshi isn't actually worth much.

Personal Opinion on Product - Given the abundance of photos featured here, one can assess that I've come across Angel Passed Children many a time, and as is often the case with collectibles, the easiest to obtain are usually not among the most thrilling. Angel Passed Children is essentially the baby (there's a pun somewhere here) of Koshitaka Izumi, the weaker half of the Valkyrie Profile hentai doujinshi Deadman Walking. As you can tell from some of the pictures, Izumi's abilities leave a bit to be desired at times, but like Deadman Walking, the stories have few extraneous details and even fewer words, making them perfect for foreigners to follow with ease. However, you may be wondering just where the heck are the stories as you'll hit the last page before it feels like the doujinshi even began. At 38 pages, Angel Passed Children is on the longer side compared to most doujinshi, but literally half of the book is squandered on what feels like advertising. Izumi got a whole boatload of guest artists to "contribute", but they spend more time talking about their three favorite Valkyrie Profile characters and plugging their own respective circles than they do providing real content to Angel Passed Children. Although, maybe I shouldn't be complaining when the "Best 3" drawings contain the nicest art in the book. In the end, Angel Passed Children is best appreciated when taken as a random smattering of drawings, which I suppose is precisely what Westerners like myself seek. If you follow Valkyrie Profile doujinshi sales long enough, I'm sure you'll stumble across it, and if it's cheap, pick it up. At the very least, production values aren't too shabby with different color tinted pages, different color inks, and a fancy full-color page.

Personal Opinion on Product - Now here's something you don't see everyday. The smaller A5-sized variety of doujinshi is far less common than its usual B5 counterpart, and, unfortunately, the size of the comic isn't the only thing that's small around here. Hikari no Ao is also light on art, devoting over half of its pages to essentially just text. It's no novel, though; rather, it's a showcase of the responses to a Valkyrie Profile survey, in which the fans participating give their favorites for characters/couples/quotes/moves/endings/etc. It's actually pretty intriguing to go through, as I really adore the sense of community, and I wish the West had something comparable for Valkyrie Profile fans. I also laughed my ass off at the doujinshi's artist poking fun at the crazy responses, like five people picking Bellion and Lezard as their favorite couple, haha. And I don't think I even want to ponder the one person picking Ganossa + Geraldo. This lengthy fan response section does have some art, but seeing as most of it is scratchy sketches submitted by fans, it can't hold a candle to the art by the doujinshi's creator, who's actually very talented despite what the covers may suggest. It's a shame we get to see so little of Sutehiko's work, but we do get an absolutely lovely drawing of Yumeru in mermaid form on the front page. Hikari no Ao should also come with a separate ankeeto (questionnaire) booklet, which I assume sets things up for a following doujinshi to have more fan responses. Ironically, this tiny booklet has more interesting art than the comic itself. Make sure your copy of Hikari no Ao comes with it or you're missing out.

Personal Opinion on Product - I could be abruptly harsh on Jikken no Jikan, suggesting that all you have to do is look at the samples to see that the art is markedly subpar compared to the average doujinshi, but lets dissect this matter a little more. I try to be an open-minded person when it comes to unconventional art styles, understanding that not all art needs to be instantly accessible and appealing for it to be worth appreciating, but when you look past the intentional peculiarities of Jikken no Jikan such as the pouty lips and heavily outlined eyes, it's clear that some odd traits of the comic can be chalked up purely to lack of training. Both artists have their own individual weaknesses ranging from crossed, lazy eyes to lopsided mouths, but one that they both share is a very frail grasp of correct proportions. The characters look like freakin' ice cream cones, with big round heads on top and bodies that taper down to practically nothing. And I can't tell what the heck Togawa was going for with the bubbles at the corners of mouths. It makes me think they have spit welling up, which is just nasty. I wish I could say there was one awesome drawing to make it all worthwhile or that it was so hilarious that the quality of the art doesn't really matter, but, regrettably, I can't. Unless you see something redeemable in the scans that I don't, I can firmly advise passing on this one.

Personal Opinion on Product - While I'm not a fan of the pug-faced Lenneth on the cover (although I'd probably make an even worse look if I had a sword digging into my arm like that, haha), the inside of Kougen Tenjouraku demonstrates some tremendous drawing chops, not to mention some terrific humor. Probably my favorite aspect of the comic is its sporadic full-page illustrations. There's a beautiful mermaid Yumeru, a dramatic collage of Aluze and Lenneth, a sly Meltina, and the emotionally gripping image of Shiho and Suo seen in the samples. There's also a great gag for us diehard video game fans about the usual scene from the beginning of the game in which Lenneth is ordered to Midgard and transformed into her Valkyire garb, except this time some wires must've gotten crossed and her outfit is that of the Valkyrie from Namco's Legend of Valkyrie, hehe. I also love the Belenus strip, if only for it starring the often neglected but badass nobleman. In general, there's great variety to the character representation (even Lorenta!), and the jokes play off of scenes that were begging to be parodied. And after you've had your fill of comedy, there's a lovely serious story to wrap it all up about Lenneth and Lucio returning to the place of Platina's death. All together, a very well-rounded doujinshi that would make an excellent addition to any collection.

Personal Opinion on Product - When I first came across Seraphic Knight online, the images I found didn't give me the greatest first impression. The characters on the front and back cover looked a little off, and the story art looked even more peculiar. If you asked me back then, I would've said it looked pretty poor, but now that I can hold the doujinshi in my hands and go through the entire thing, I take it all back tenfold. Artist Senju Kanariya has a truly unique style, and even though it has a bit of a learning curve, once you come to appreciate its captivating qualities, you'll adore it just as I have. With wide faces and heavy, forlorn eyes, the art strikes on a deeper level than your usual generic anime style, and it's almost got a surreal realism to it, if you'll pardon my oxymoron. The shading is exquisite, with lots of painstaking cross-hatching, and Kanariya knows precisely how to put a page to its best use, never cluttering a panel, employing blank space to powerful effect, and heightening the drama with bold usage of black and white extremes. The two sides of the cover tell you essentially what to expect - one story focused on the events immediately after Shiho's death and another depicting Meltina's graduation from the Sorcery Collegium. Due to the aforementioned exceptional layout, you'll blow through the stories fast, but that's no concern when you're savoring every second. To top it all off, the doujinshi begins and ends with two-page spreads of each female lead, and the contrast of tones and the fluidity of the lines make for two mesmerizing images you're not bound to forget any time soon.

Personal Opinion on Product - I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this doujinshi considering the cover is rather strange looking, with the very elongated body and wide-eyed dopey look on Valkyrie's face (not to mention if you look closely the fingers on the left hand are backwards), but if you can get past the quirks of Ruiji Minagi's style, the art is quite impressive. In fact, I somewhat started to grow to like the slender frames and surprised-looking expressions. The comedy isn't too bad, but there's not much to take in if you're not fluent in Japanese. Seeing Domo-kun pop out from under Freyja's hat and Geraldo dressed up like Cardcaptor Sakura is at least worth a chuckle, though. :) You also get a good variety of characters represented here, and there are character profile sections with comments from Minagi. Ironically, I got the biggest laugh out of the profiles. The artist apparently thinks Aimi is a "sexy dynamite" and Shiho has a "nice body", and there are some really strange Engrish descriptions too. I know what a "Wizard" and "Sword Master" is, but things go downhill when Geraldo is called a "Plincess". Then Lawry is called a "Jager", and Liseria is a "Predictionary". What the heck? o_O All in all, this is definitely a doujinshi that gaijin tri-Ace fans will be buying mostly for the art, so even if the cover doesn't make you go "wow", it's still worth giving a shot.
