John and Audra's Randomness - Know Your Enemies

Know Your Castlevania Enemies

Yes folks, it's time to play everyone's favorite game again...

WHO'S THE MOST ANNOYING CASTLEVANIA ENEMY?

So which CV baddie do you hate the most? Well there's so many to choose from, but certain enemies just stick out as being very irritating. Here's my picks for the most hated of 'em all.

1. Medusa Heads

Hate 'em, hate 'em, HATE 'EM! They SUCK! Strategically placed to knock you off of things and to make you feel like a complete novice, Medusa heads are a royal pain. Bloodlines and Symphony Of The Night have possibly the worst Medusa heads for this.

2. Flea Men (Igors)

First off, what the hell is a Flea man? Igor I get, a little short guy who hangs with Frankenstein, like in CV 1. But now they're called flea men. I guess Igor was politically incorrect against Russian guys? Who knows. Anyhow, Flea men are enough to make you prejudiced against midgets. Annoying! They leap around making this squeaking noise. Flea men would be my sister's most hated CV baddies. The flea men in Bloodlines are pretty freakish..they look like hermit crabs! And if that isn't bad enough, they are RABBITS in CV 4!

Help! Bill Cosby is trying to eat me!

3. Blobs (Mucks)

I call these guys mucks because when they jump around, they make a mucking noise. Behaving much like flea men, Blobs jump just out of reach of your whip sometimes. Highly annoying, especially in CV 2: Simon's Quest.

4. Ravens

Ravens are the scourge of the skies in Castlevania. Made to knock you off of ledges usually. In CV 2 when you touch a raven, though, it dies, but you still take a hit. In Bloodlines, the ravens aren't nearly as hard, but they make such an annoying sound when they flap their wings!

5. Bats

Much like ravens, bats patrol the skies to knock you off of things, or to just be a major pain in numbers. In Symphony Of The Night, you run into many bats at once, in CV 1 and 2, they usually travel alone. Still annoying, and one of the enemies commonly associated with CV games.

6. Spiders

The spiders in CV 4 are a major pain, and the little spiders that they shoot out will follow you off of the screen. But possibly the WORST of the annoying spiders are those in CV2: Simon's Quest.....I always manage to get hit by them! Perhaps this explains my morbid terror of spiders in real life. Look at what you've done to me, Konami!

7. Mermen

Ranging from just annoying to downright dangerous, Mermen show up more frequently in CV games than catsup on a hamburger. Spitting either fire (most games), water (to irritate you, in CV4... hurts you if it hits you head on but mostly just freaks ya out)or acid (hurts you and makes a wacky zipping noise... like the melted plastic of a burning GI Joe... uh oh tangent... anyhow that's in Bloodlines), Mermen never fail to show up and cause trouble in watery areas. The most diverse and fluidly animated mermen appear in Symphony Of The Night, in red, orange and purple varieties, although the scariest mermen are the huge "manga Mermen" in Bloodlines..the acid spitting, twice the size of a human ones. CV2: Belmont's Revenge has some weird looking little runt Mermen.

A manga merman! Thanks to Zack at the Bloodlines page.

8. Ghosts

Simply titled, ghosts are another of the every game appearing enemies. They take two hits to kill in every game except Symphony Of The Night (unless Alucard is very weak). Ghosts always appear first as a flicker of light and follow you, usually they are very small although in CV 2 they are larger than Simon. I bet when John Lennon had his vision from a man on a flaming pie telling him to name his band Beatles with an a, it was actually a Ghost who dug rock and roll.

I am a flying birthday cake. Fear my powers. Wheeee.

9. Mudmen

Mudmen appear in many diverse forms throughout CV games. The mudmen in CV 2 and 3 appear as large swamp dwelling monsters. in CV 4 they appear as cave walking humanoids that split into many smaller versions when hit. In The Castlevania Adventure and CV 2: Belmont's Revenge, the Mudmen fall as drops from the sky. Disturbing. In Symphony of The Night, there is only one place to encounter a Mudman....they can be summoned by the Lesser Demon in the library. Kill him fast enough and the Mudman won't appear on your enemies list.

10. Fuzzballs

Fuzzballs suck because quite simply, they cannot be killed!...Unless you are Sypha with your ice spell...and how many people are Sypha with an ice spell? No raised hands! Anyhow, they slide over sections of platform and make it difficult for you to time jumps and they just make a major annoyance of themselves. Thus they earn a spot with the annoying enemies. My pick for most annoying Fuzzballs..those in CV 4 in the abandoned mine/waterfall area, and those in the upside down room in stage 6 of Bloodlines.

All I wanted was a nail file. Fine, just hit me.

11. Hands

Hands act differently in a few CV games, I remember them most from CV 2, where they take a lot of hits and they can make you think twice before going near them. The hands in CV 4 can't hurt you themselves, but they will hold you while the spiders and leaf men close in on you. When this happens, duck and brandish the whip. I think brandish is my favorite word in the English language. No, wait, Jell-O is my favorite word.

12. Bone Dragons

Bone dragons take a lot of hits and appear in a whole slew of CV games . ( They are called White Dragons and Orobourouses in SOTN. I have no idea what Orobourous means. Sounds like an exotic food dish. Today on Emeril, Orobourous casserole. BAM! ) The good thing about Bone Dragons is that their bodies usually turn into a heart or money bag for every section when they are destroyed, in the old Castlevania's. Possibly the worst of all bone dragons are those that appear in CV 1.

13. Pungachis

Appearing only in Castlevania Adventure and CV 2 Belmont's Revenge, Pungachis are a pain in the ass! Any enemy in CV Adventure is sure to piss you off, since you'll be toting leather in no time, but it takes a Pungachi hit in CV 2: BR to knock off the whip upgrades. Hate em!

14. Dhurons

Dhurons appear in a couple different Castlevania games, but the ones in Symphony Of The Night are actually less of a pain than their CV 3 and 4 counterparts, with their quick stab and run. In SOTN, you can get the rapier that the Dhuron's so stealthily wield from them, but it's a rare and not even that powerful of a drop item, but has a nifty special attack.

15. Balloon Pods

Are they mushrooms or jellyfish? The correct answer is JELLYSHROOM BASTARDS! These weenies are all it takes in CV 2: Belmont's Revenge to knock off every heart you have. But oddly enough, Balloon Pods in Symphony Of The Night can be your buddies..equip the Topaz Circlet and wak through the spores after hitting the large Balloon Pod. Get some life back!
