Symphony of the Night: Oddities
Weird little tidbits of info about Castlevania Symphony Of The Night

1. Where have I seen this before?

You may notice that many of the swords in Symphony are different versions of each other. Compare Dark Blade and Gurthang. Gurthang is a bloody Dark Blade. Compare the Namakura and any Katana....the Namakura is labeled "Poorly made sword, 2 - hand" . Well, it's a poor attempt at making a Katana. Check out the Muramasa and Red Rust...Red Rust is a rusty Muramasa. In fact, it's technically more powerful. What, Red Rust is more powerful than something? Yes, it beats the Muramasa (before leveling it up, of course), and the afforementioned Namakura is the 2nd weakest sword in the game, behind the cursed Tyrfing (you can use it later but what's the point?) But get this - your bare hands do more damage than Red Rust, Namakura and Tyrfing!

2. Maybe he wanted to go straight...

Did you know that all but the Fairie familiar in SOTN are derived from your enemies? Of course the Bat is just like the enemy Bat, but the Demon is actually one of the Imps that you fight, the Sword is derived from the Puppet Swords, Poltergeists and Spectral Swords, and the Ghost is derived not from the SOTN Ghosts, but the Dracula X Ghosts, who became Skull Lords in Symphony.

3. Holy subweapons, Batman!

Did you know that all but the Aguneia (Lightning) and Stopwatch subweapons in SOTN use holy power? Of course the Holy Book, Holy Ashes ( Bibuti ) and Holy Cross use holy power, and the Holy Water uses holy and fire, but the Axe, Dagger and Rebound Stone do as well! You can tell by the yellow flash they produce when striking certain enemies, the double damage they do against undead enemies, and the guard Richter has against them, which makes the Axe ideal for destroying Richter's curse. It may hit Richter on the way down but it won't hurt him at all. As for the remaining 2 subweapons, both use lightning. You know the Aguniea is lightning, but the Stopwatch has no attack, say you? Do Richter's item crash, and after the clocks run out, lightning attack!

4. Flash in the hand.

To find out just what power a weapon is using, check the flash.

Blue: Ice

Orange: Fire

Dark Yellow: Lightning

Yellow (Chartreuse): Holy

Dark Green: Dark

Red: Cut

Multi-Colored: Hit

Gray: Stone

Beige/Olive Gray: Poison

Bright White or Bright Multi-Colored: Absorbed (You're helping that enemy, switch weapons!)

Also, the description on some weapons may fool you. Dark Blade and Dark Shield do not use dark power, they are regular cut and hit. The Mormegil and Tyrfing are the only dark powered swords. And, the Were Bane does no added damage to any Were-creatures, Werewolves or Were-Panthers. Also, when fighting Alucard's Doppelgangers, you get to see the REALLY cool effects of weapons, not the flash, buit the way they affect you.

Dark: Alc get's all smokey!

Ice: He gets incased in ice!

Fire: He catches on fire!

Stone: Turn him to stone!

Poison: He get's all wavy looking and poisoned just like when you get poisoned!

5. Will the REAL H.P. Lovecraft character please stand up?

As you may know, "Ctulhu" the frog-demon from both the first and second castles, is derived from "Cthulhu" H.P. Lovecraft's loveable demon. (Yeah, loveable is a pun) Well, you may also notice that Ctulhu looks nothing like Cthulhu. Well, the REAL Cthulhu is lurking about in the second castle, in Death Wing's Lair. ( That's the Reverse Olrox's Quarters.) He's the Malachi...same body as Ctulhu but really has Cthulhu's head.

6. That's probably perverted...

Stand still for a moment with the Fairie familiar out. After a short while, she'll land on your shoulder. After you move, she falls back and unintentionally flashes you her panties.

7. So funny...

You may have read the description of the Secret Boots, and seen "Discreetly increases height!", and noticed that it adds nothing to your attributes and not given them a second thought. Though it's true that they don't do anything useful, they really DO increase your height! They give Alc a good 2 or 3 inches. Equip them and watch and you'll see him grow right before your eyes as soon as you unpause the game. If you're having trouble seeing it, stand by a wall that has notches or something in it and watch your head.

8. Where'd that elevator come from??

In the first castle, at the bottom left of the Outer Wall, there is a room with an Armor Lord in front of it. Inside the room is a pot roast in a wall, and if you stand in the space in the wall, centered and perfectly still, in a moment you'll be lowered down into a room with Jewel Knuckles and a Mirror Cuirass. Normally you would not be able to pass through until you possess form of mist but if you do this as soon as you arrive at the Outer Wall, the Jewel Knuckles will be a very powerful weapon for you throughout most of the first castle, and the Mirror Cuirass is great early on, especially against those pain in the ass Stone Roses. (By the time you fight the stone inducing Medusa heads regularly though, you should have better armor.) To exit the room, hop back on the elevator.

9. Well he has to keep it someplace!

Look closely at the wolf and bat when Alucard turns into them. They have a sword and scabbard on their waist! (If that's what you'd call it... do bats have waists?) Well, he has to keep the sword he's using somewhere, although where the hell do the other swords, shields and all that damn food go to? Even when he isn't in bat or wolf form, what the hell does he do with it all?

10. Peanuts, get yer peanuts here...

In the 2nd castle, in the room where the purple looking save point took you to fight the Succubus in the 1st castle, there is a hidden cache of peanuts in the center of the room...and it returns each time you re-enter. Ever eaten a peanut with Alc? You have to catch them by getting directly underneath them after you toss it and then pressing up. When you do he gains 50 life back and raises his arm triumphantly!
