Castlevania Reviews - Haunted Castle

Haunted Castle

HAUNTED CASTLE!!!

It rocks!!! Now we can all play Haunted Castle on our MAME Emulators. Well, I have nothing bad to say about Haunted Castle other than the 3 continues only thing, but I've still beaten it several times and I love this game! Now, if you guys want a walkthrough, mail me and let me know. (Blue Mana Drop@aol.com) I have plenty of screenshots to illustrate an entire walkthrough. But I can do this much for now, I'll post a brief story on the game, the weapons, levels, and bosses, and a screenshot of each level and boss. So here goes:

The Story:

I believe that the year is 1595, because there is a timeline at the end of stage 1. See below:

See? Perhaps Castlevania IV is a prequel in 1591, Castlevania 1 and Vampire Killer in 1592, Simon's Quest in 1593, and Akumajo Dracula in 1594. I mean, truthfully, how could he fight Dracula so many times in 2 years? Give him 5 years!

So anyway, Dracula's a real ass and he waits for Simon to settle down and get married, and he kidnaps his bride. BAD IDEA, DRAC!

The Weapons:

In this one, Simon actually uses that SWORD that every Belmont carries on their belts! But not until level 3, and you have to snag one from a flying spectre or a flea bastard. ( It's much easier to get it at the end of the level when 2 seperate flea men both drop it. ) Well, here's a look at all of the weapons:

Basic Weapons:

Leather Whip: As always, you start with it. It's not too strong, but hey, you gotta start out with this one. It's like, a Belmont honour thing.

Vampire Killer: It's a BIG ASS morning star in this one, with a HUGE spiked ball on the end! Very cool, and much more powerful than the leather whip. You have to kill the last skeleton in the forest in level 2 to get this one, right before entering the caverns. Duck after killing him though to avoid the ghost, then grab that baby!

Belmont Sword: I don't know if that's the official name, but that's what I'm calling it! It's even more powerful than the vampire killer, and it looks damn cool! This is the weapon that will serve you the longest in the game, as you can have it for part of level 3 and then all of levels 4, 5 and 6. Get this one from either: a flying spectre in the middle of level 3 (it's hard to hit him though), or 2 seperate flea men will drop this one at the end of level 3.

Sub-Weapons:

The Cannonball: You get this one first, 2 skeletons at the end of level 1 will drop it. It functions a bit like holy water. It uses 1 heart.

The Boomerang: Well, it's shaped like one anyway...it just doesn't return. It's very powerful though. Get this one from the last zombie in stage 2 before entering the caverns, or from a flea man at the end of level 3, or from a mummy in level 4. Uses 1 heart.

The Stopwatch: It's actually really cool in this one, it works on bosses! Get this one from a bat in stage 2, in the middle of the caverns, and use it right away too, before a horde of bats comes out. Use it on the Bone Dragon King at the end, too! You can also get this one in stage 5 from a raven. Uses 2 hearts.

The Rosary: The best sub weapon. It doesn't return like the cross of other CV games, but it continues to glow and shoot out many crosses while only using up 1 heart per every 3 crosses that come out or so. Get this from a flea man in level 3, and the skeleton at the end of stage 5.

The Levels:

Level 1

Level 1 begins in town and goes through a wooded section with marble pillars.

Boss: The boss of level 1 is Medusa. Just jump over the snakes and drop the cannonballs

Level 2

Level 2 begins in a forest and enters the underground waterfall (merman room) section, and then out into a mountain area which can be seen in the background of Castlevania IV's waterfall level!

Boss: The boss of level 2 is the Bone Dragon King. He can be easily taken out with a stopwatch.

Level 3

Level 3 takes place inside the first section of the castle, and Bloody Tears plays in the background!

Boss: The boss of level 2 is a Stained Glass Knight, like in Castlevania 64. Hitting him with the sword, rosary or boomerang and dodging his jumps will take him out.

Level 4

Level 4 takes place deeper into the castle, where mummies in coffins abound.

Boss: The boss of level 4 is a gigantic golem of rock who hangs from the ceiling and tries to smash you or throw rocks at you. You can only hit him in the chin/head area and when he's very close. Jumping and using your sword, rosaries or boomerangs is the most effective way.

Level 5

Level 5 takes place in the last section of castle before reaching the bridge to Dracula. Deadly foes lie within.

Boss: Frankenstein is the boss this time around! Just wail away with rosaries right in front of him and he should fold soon enough.

Level 6

Level 6 is a crumbling bridge. Make it across without falling and avoid the ravens, and you'll reach the big guy.

Boss: Dracula! He's not very hard either, surprisingly. I've even beaten him without being touched...if you start throwing rosaries as soon as he comes out you can take him out easily, as he doesn't need to be hit in just the head. After destroying his first form he turns into a very easy form, a big head. Really. Just keep throwing em.

Well there ya have the Haunted Castle review. If you guys want a walkthrough, mail me and I'll make one!
